Teacher’s stabbing at Hoërskool Die Burger sparks school safety concerns

A teacher was stabbed, allegedly by a Grade 8 learner, sparking safety concerns and panic among parents at Hoërskool Die Burger in Bergbron.

In an altercation that has left the local community reeling, a teacher at Hoërskool Die Burger in Bergbron, neighbouring Northcliff, was stabbed, allegedly by a Grade 8 learner, during a classroom incident yesterday.

Northcliff Melville Times reports that this incident, which comes just a week after a Grade 12 learner assaulted a teacher on the same premises, has raised serious concerns about safety in educational institutions.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the teacher who was stabbed received immediate medical assistance and was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The current condition of the teacher remains unknown, prompting an outpouring of concern from parents and community members.

Authorities acted quickly, apprehending the learner involved and informing parents about the incident. A formal police investigation is now underway, with law enforcement and the Department of Education committed to uncovering the details of this disturbing event.

Steve Mabona, the spokesperson for the department, emphasised the importance of the issue and stated that the school governing body (SGB) would also be conducting its own investigation. He noted that the SGB plays a crucial role in ensuring discipline within the school and made it clear that significant measures would be taken in response to the incident.

Worried parents rushed to the school to collect their children after hearing the news, highlighting the deep concern for safety that the incident has sparked. As the community grapples with the implications of such violence, many are calling for answers and reassurances regarding their children’s safety at school.
