They were only 1" nails. That's barely hit your brain. Considering they were that size and he was using a miter saw, I'd say he was doing trim molding. That means they might have been brads. Not that it wouldn't hurt! What a moron.

Then again.<P>I would think he'd pass out after cutting off the hand, if not, then after shooting in the head.<P>And what did he do after cutting of his hand? I imagine seeing your hand and bones and such like that would fuck you up. Plus he was in pain and all, did he yell for help? Did he even think about calling 9-1-1? Or did he Immidiately go "FUCK THAT HURTS" and cap himself in the brain?

No, I'd imagine he was in OH-MY-GOD-I-WANT-TO-DIE sort of pain. Think about it, have *you* ever been through that intense of pain before? Like as in, "I would give anything, or do anything just to make it stop" bad? <BR>Then imagine what that pain must do to your sense of reasoning and judgement. Granted, most of us, even those of us who can *not* tolerate pain well (like me!) would at least think through the situation, but I dunno what sort of emotional state he was in before his hand was sliced off.<BR>Granted, considering this made CNN.com it's a *rather* unusual thing and this most likely will go down in *some* sort of Darwin Award uban-legend thing, but man, I get queasy just thinking about experiencing that kind of pain.<BR>-keith

...and that poor unfortunate soul is a relative of a girl I go to church with. And yes, the reason he says he shot himself was because the pain was so bad that all he wanted to do was die.<P>Having never experienced amputation, I must say that I am at a loss to understand what he must have been going through.<P>Try saying a prayer for him instead...it had to hurt pretty bad if all he wanted to do was die.

It severed the link to his frontal lobe and created a nice hole in his skull. He did live out the rest of his life, although it wasn't very normal since he was mostly isolated from others then on and spent his time talking to plants and animals.

Being a mucisian I've always had the horrible fear of amputating my hands. Even though there's the element of comedy (I laughed when I read it) involved I can only imagine how henious that would be!<P>Also, if anyone has ever used a nail gun then you could see how you could put 12 nails into your head in record time. I picture the guy somehow holding the trigger and just resting his head on the safty thing on the front. That would insert 12 nails in your head in about 2 seconds!<P>Good God. Poor guy...I hope he recovers!

I punched a nail with a ramset (a nailgun fired with a .22 blank shell) into my thumb and the pain wasn't that bad cause it happened so fast. After yanking the nail out of the bone it hurt and my nail went black. <P>The initial pain wasn't really bad, so I can see him shooting again and again until the first one started to hurt.<P>I wonder if his head turned black and fell off.
